Thinking of buying a notebook?

I used to try and talk people out of buying a notebook unless they really needed the portability.

Dollar for dollar, notebooks are seldom as powerful as desktop computers. Also, the total cost of ownership tends to be significantly more when you factor in the cost of repairs, upgrades, and replacing the battery.

The prices of notebook computers have dropped dramatically in the past year or so, however. When you stop and consider that when you purchase a notebook it comes with an LCD monitor, notebooks tend to be a good value.

A lot of people don't realize that notebooks come in many flavors. Here are the main categories:

Types of Notebooks:

Category Market Price
Affordable but Rugged (student, traveler) $
Mid-Range (home user) $$
Desktop Replacement (gamer, power user) $$$
Multimedia (video/ music professional or enthusiast) $$$
Ultra Portable (frequent flyer, business executive) $$$$
Tablet (medical or retail professional) $$$$$

Things to Consider:

  CD burner
  DVD burner
  memory card reader
  size of screen/ resolution
quality of screen (x-brite or crystalbrite, resolution, viewing-angle, brightness,    colour and contrast)
  size of keyboard
  speed (CPU, RAM, hard drive)
mobile vs. regular processor vs. price
  hard drive capacity
  weight of system
methods of network/ internet connectivity (56K, LAN, WiFi, Bluetooth, IR, cellular)
  sound quality
  video card power
  touch pad type and feature
ports (usb, firewire, mouse, external monitor, sound)
  docking station or port replicator
  how is warranty honored?
  wow factor/ bragging rights

And Here's the Up-Sell...

  would you like a carrying-case?
  an extra battery?
  a wireless router?
an external mouse? a wireless mouse?
an external floppy drive, hard drive or dvd burner?
a printer (and a USB cable)?
  a web cam?
a telephone headset (for Skype calls)?
  a portable notebook surge protector?
  a LCD screen cleaning kit?
  a spindle of blank CD's or DVD's?
  an extended warranty?
  Microsoft Office or other software?
to transfer data from your 'old' computer?
